"a unique way into the heart of the world"
William Stafford received the 1963 National Book Award for Poetry and served as Library of Congress Consultant in Poetry (US Poet Laureate) in 1970. He taught English at Lewis & Clark College and published over 50 volumes of poetry. His best known poems include "Traveling through the Dark," "At the Un-National Monument along the Canadian Border," "A Ritual to Read to Each Other," and "A Story that Could be True." His poems have appeared in song, film, television, sculpture, in halls of government and along Hollywood Boulevard. Stafford's poems focus on daily moments in Kansas and Oregon, and many other places, covering themes such as landscape, technology, faith, peace, and identity. Stafford had a generous and patient spirit, believing that while "justice will take us millions of intricate moves," we can achieve creative and spiritual peace with our culture and our planet. Work has continued since Stafford's death to chronicle his life and writings for a world in deep need of his voice. This website is one effort toward that end.
